Here’s a look at the unboxing. It turns out that I ordered 82 ingredients, and 79 of them arrived neatly packed in 40-count boxes. There are droppers included. Some of the powders I ordered wouldn’t fit in the smaller jars, for the size I was ordering, so they went in to larger aluminum containers. It’s a really neat package, and Perfumer’s World has really upped their game, in terms of packaging. The great thing about their platform is that you can order sizes as small as 1 gram, so you can audition costly or obscure ingredients without as much investment as you’d put in, if you had to order 4 or 5 mL at a time, for a minimum amount, per item. They charge a $0.90 bottling fee, which is a great trade off option, for the flexibility in minimum amounts. So, you’ll see that I ordered many ingredients, some of them as little as 1 gram or 2 grams, in cases where the product is costly, or very strongly fragrant, or obscure, and rarely or hardly used. 

I mixed together an inventive chypre-Fougere style fragrance, to kick off trying out this batch of ingredients that I ordered, and, for the most part, the recipe remained self-contained within the ingredients listed here. 

I made a fragrance with tree moss absolute, fixative 505, green lavender absolute, a drop of osmanthus absolute, timberol, z11hd, iso e super, ambrofix, maple lactone, some dilute ethyl benzoate, heliotropal, isocyclocitral, beta homocyclocitral, methyl pamplemousse, cis-jasmone, a tiny bit of West Indies bay oil, a good helping of tonkarome, agar wood oil siam 10%, isobutyl quinoline, pyralone, a small touch of bergamot, agrestic by palette naturals, clary amber, cashmeran, and cervolide.

This was my ingredients list, for the most part, although I found that I had added a few ingredients not listed. Then, as I discussed the formulation with Google Gemini, I decided to put in some more tolu balsam, which is a solid resin material, to make the fragrance sweeter. I also added a slight citrus ginger opening, and the overall effect is a mossy, dense forest woodsy type of setting, intensely fresh at the opening, with an almost psychedelic brightening of the senses, upon first encountering it, due to the strange qualities of the tree moss, which was supposed to be one of the main features (substituted for oak moss, since I don’t really like that ingredient that much), along with the green lavender absolute, which is a very natural and true-to-form lavender that doesn’t smell as common as regular lavender oils that you might be accustomed to. The other main feature ingredients are isobutyl quinoline and pyralone, which I had tried out, long ago, in a former haul, where all of the ingredients had since been lost, and even though I was somewhat at odds with the smell of these fragrances, initially, back then, I had a sort of longing for that sort of smell, again, and I felt that I could put together a better formulation than with ingredient purchases that I had put together in previous years. These ingredients impart a characteristically leathery feature to the fragrance. I added some spruce, and some imaginative ingredients, like osmanthus absolute, which brought the fragrance to an apricot leg of the journey, and it eventually got buried, as the fragrance became more complex. So, the result is a pretty masculine-styled scent, with a fresh, green and citrus opening to it, leathery, foresty, and woodsy accents to it, with mossy, lavender notes, over a sweet base of tonka and tolu balsam, essentially. It’s styled upon a classic formulation foundation, as discussed, above, so it smells like it fits in, pretty well, in the fragrance world, of wearing fragrances out and about, in public. I added a minimum, or a trace, in some cases, of ingredients, so the creation process was pretty restrained and well-planned, I feel.

* maybe a room spray, for the time being. On one hand, it doesn’t smell very modern, and it was my first take on this fragrance type, so it could be better, I figure.

The package arrived by the end of the week, as it took a couple of days to process the order, bottle and prepare the ingredients, package them, etc., before they were sent out (the ingredients came individually shrink-wrapped, as well). Then, the package was sent from Thailand on Wednesday (Thursday, Thailand time), and the item was shipped via DHL express, so it arrived very promptly by early Friday afternoon. The tracking was updated regularly, so I was staying on top of the package status. The package incurred an additional fee of $55 or so, from customs, but I was able to cover that without a problem.

 I’d spent a few days with my new fragrance composition, and I think it’s great! (still). It uses 16+ ingredients:

Sophorxa a powerfully fresh and sweet androgynous floral wood fragrance, with a helping of animalic primal character to it. I’ve still yet to create a bottle of it; I need to work out the drop by drop proportions, or weights.

New, for Spring 2025: Yuzu Delight, A Citrus Elixir Fragrance

 

As I’ve been working on refining the bottled version of Eau Pigeonoid, a newer fragrance, which I detail, here, on this blog (the fragrance smells great “neat,” or, applied directly to the skin, although translating that olfactory experience in to a bottled spray product proves challenging), I’m noticing some nice fragrance notes that are coming out of the woodwork, as I work to simplify the formula. Notes like “orange delight,” one of my favorite childhood treats, which I now encounter as a citron/lemon variant (it’s essentially a thickened, sweet jelly of citrus in a bite size, chocolate-covered bar).

It reminded me of a former, although recent attempt at composing a fragrance, one which took on a rich theme: a citrus elixir, with a bouquet of citrus ingredients, headed by yuzu essential oil, following with grapefruit and mandarin, with light floral effects of magnolia, over a base of Tonka bean and cocoa, with some black pepper, for spice, and blackcurrant bud, to enliven and freshen the scent’s mood and profile.

In my latest purchase, I revisit the citrus elixir theme, as a reconstitution, and, as a refinement. For example, this time around, I have a much more well-resourced set of ingredients. I’m using yellow champaca absolute instead of magnolia, so I’m excited to see how this take on a citrus elixir “Yuzu Delight” will turn out, with much of the skeleton of the fragrance, otherwise, remaining the same.

Product Review: Alpha Ionone (Natural), from Perfumer’s Apprentice.

 Dedicated botanists, as for backdrop to a fragrance-making and mixing enthusiast “hobbyist” sort of pseudo-professional profile of perfume-maker - not quite a lab chemist, ever, foreseeably, yet not quite an elementary-level “essential oils only” type of fragrance mixer, by moonlight, as it were… would not quite classify the Iris as a notably fragrant flower. No, by it’s formative traits, it is a perennial tuberous root-replicating crop; a rhizome, that is. The flowers? Classic, via our Art History lessons, as Jean Claude Van Damme, though… man, he could kick some ass. 

I’m still on, like, my last blog post’s lingering persona and effects, and attitude.

It’s Claude Monet, who did the famous landscapes of the folk-ish peasant pastorale, he, himself, a master of observation, and an indulgent one, when it came to large strokes, and goop, with his impasto technique, with the tube of acrylic, forming some of the characteristic primary favorites of art lovers, of the Early Modern Period; here, Impressionism, as it’s known, along with Van Gogh, who did similar work, stylistically.

Botany enthusiasts ex art lovers-slash-historians would instantly draw a connection, between Claude Monet and his Irises. 

Product Review: New Haul of fragrance ingredients from PerfumersWorld.com.

 It's only been two months since I started doing this stuff (again). (I'd previously, back from around 2008-2012 had the budget to do fragrancing, with essential oils from Whole Foods, mostly). This time around, though, it was serious. I'd discovered online retail and wholesale suppliers of fragrance compounds and aroma ingredients (essential oils and absolutes), and I finally had my living situation and circumstances such that I could muster pulling off some mail order purchases, and develop my fragrance-making hobby successfully. My latest haul was for over $1250 and it got me over 70+ quality ingredients, of my choosing, priced by the gram, as the website www.perfumersworld.com does, as their retail fragrance supply basis, as an e-commerce website and organization, based out of Thailand. 

My summer of 2021 Perfumer's World fragrance ingredients haul - over 70 ingredients of my choice, given 2 months of experience and shopping around, at this point; I had my picks, and I got what I wanted, good and all, for the most part. 

This time around, I was interested in procuring mostly highly-prized standards and classics, such as rose de mai, I got jasmine absolute, jasmine flowers, methyl jasmonate, jasmine sambac absolute, frangipani absolute, indole crystals, for reconstituting these flowers, artificially (by design), and many other classics of fragrances beloved, and the well-known plants, herbs, flowers, and trees that provide these lovely fragrances, as well as some fragrance industry insider tricks ingredients, such as Schiff's Base, which is also used to reconstitute flower absolutes. I also dived richly in to the world of classic musks, of the global fragrance research and design houses; a history of musks, that I'd procured, as you would see, from my listed purchases, below. I also decided to experiment, slightly, with hormonal and mood-altering pheromone compounds, such as truffle concentrate, to see how they would affect the fragrance-wearing experience. 

I made a neat-o fresh, minty, cool, phenolic and narcotic rich floral essences composition out of this, after I had spent some time protecting the shipment, once it had gotten in to my possession, delivered by Fed-Ex. The shipment from www.perfumersworld.com took about a week, or so, to arrive, and I had security concerns over receiving it, since I go out, in to town, to feed the birds, during the day, and there were some delays, aside from that, in various stops that the shipment had gone through, such as being held up in Taiwan, and then the package went to Alaska, and Tennessee, even, before it got squared away in the Los Angeles area, finally. I decided to have the package held at a Fed-Ex location, for me to pick up, at my leisure. I didn't play with the ingredients much, during the initial receipt phase, because I was more interested in protecting it, and keeping the bottles sealed. Opening up a haul of fragrance ingredients produces a vastly diffuse aroma experience that spreads in to the extent of neighboring households, and it draws attention to the fragrance maker, and the goings-on of making a fragrance, which is easily an enviable position to be in, given a standard neighborhood, around town. 

All things considered, and that being said, I came up with an appreciably fine(-ish), or notably novel, and "good" fragrance composition, with the inspiration behind mixing which of these purchased new ingredients ought be, being an indole cornmint (I was big on cornmint and hay absolute coming to me), floral fresh narcotic standards of perfumery history-"easy," such as rose de mai, jasmine sambac, and frangipani absolutes being the main fragrance feature components, chamomile, included,  along with a full array of several or more musks, which, this time around, with this purchase, brought a veritable selection of poignant, delicate, nuanced, clean, fresh, and beautiful musks, of the musks of standards established, throughout history, in perfumery - muscone, Macrolide, Helvetolide, Cosmone, Celestolide, Amberfix, and Velvione; I added some Vitamin E, and solubizer, some patchouli, heavy on the pink pepper, and Sugandha Kokila, an Indian fragrance, for some classic and exotic appeal. There was raspberry ketone, ethylene brassylate, phenylacetic acid, lyral, coriander, marjoram, and plenty of oud to it. All in all, I was generally reserved, about how much of each I had put in, and extra-careful, on some of the inclusions. It turned out fabulous. I highly recommend this purchasing list, as a first-resort reference for beginners and aspirants in fragrance composition mixing, and I highly recommend www.perfumersworld.com, for the ingredients purchase. They sell by the gram, and are therefore as economical as need be, while maintaining a high standard of ingredient purity and shipment delivery handling, and customer service.
